What Is So Special About the Ghost Pepper?

The ghost pepper (or bhut jolokia chili) is a super-hot chili pepper that originated in the Northeast region of India. It is a local hybrid of two different chili peppers – the Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens. It is also a close cousin of the Scotch bonnet and habanero peppers.

Ghost peppers boast an average spiciness rating of over 1 million Scoville Heat Units (SHUs). In comparison, the popular jalapeño pepper is rated at just 2,500 to 8,000 SHUs. And the habanero is just a quarter of the spice level of ghost peppers, between 100,000 to 350,000 SHUs.

In 2007, the ghost pepper displaced the red savina pepper to take on the title of the hottest chile pepper in the world. It was in turn stripped of the title a few years later, but the ghost pepper is still considered one of the spiciest chili peppers in the world to this day.

Ghost Pepper Name Origin Story

The chili peppers are a popular local variety grown in the Northeastern region of India, particularly in the states of Assam and Nagaland. In the local languages, it is called by many names, including bhut jolokia or naga jolokia.

Originally, the name of the pepper was bhot jolokia in Assam, which translates into “pepper from Bhutan”. Assam is a state in the Himalayas that borders the kingdom of Bhutan and has a rich culinary history of incorporating hot chili peppers into traditional dishes.

Over time, the name morphed into “bhut jolokia” which means “ghost pepper” – since it fits the spice level of the pepper, the new name became the popular name.

How Spicy Is the Ghost Chili Pepper Powder?

Ghost pepper also has another name in Assam – vih jolokia or “poison pepper” due to its intense heat level. In fact, you must wear gloves at all times while chopping the fresh peppers or even handling the ghost chili pepper powder to protect your skin! When used fresh, just a tiny bit of the pepper flesh is enough to spice up a curry and a small amount of ghost pepper sriracha powder can bring intense heat to a sauce or marinade.

How to Use the Ghost Pepper Sriracha Powder?

A sriracha powder combines the delicious bold flavors of garlic with the tang of vinegar and sweetness from brown sugar. It’s created using a sophisticated drying process that preserves all the flavor.

The addition of the ghost chili powder made from dried peppers elevates the Magic Plant Farms’ sriracha powder to a whole new level of spice and smoky flavors. While cooking, you need just a pinch of this hot stuff in your recipe.
