Magic Plant Farms sriracha powder combines the great sweet and sour flavors of traditional sriracha sauce with the extreme heat of Trinidad Moruga Scorpion powder. If you like your hot sauces insanely hot, this powder is just what you need!

What Is Sriracha Powder?

When you combine the same ingredients of traditional sriracha sauce and remove the water content through dehydration, you get sriracha powder. The powder form makes it more versatile as a condiment.

You can sprinkle sriracha powder on food to add some extra kick or use it in your marinades, sauces, dressings, and recipes just like you would use any other seasoning. The powder is more versatile than the sauce and is much easier to incorporate into a wide array of culinary settings.

But be careful – minus the liquids, sriracha powder is far more potent than sriracha sauce. It is extremely spicy with sweet and sour notes.

What Is Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Powder?

The original sriracha sauce uses a variety of red jalapeno hybrid chili peppers as the central ingredient to impart spiciness. This variety of pepper has a relatively low spice level of just 1,000–2,500 Scoville units.

At Magic Plant Farms, we have replaced the red jalapeno with a different chili pepper, one with a certain reputation and pedigree – the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper. This chili pepper is the central ingredient in the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion powder.

Powder made from freshly harvested and dehydrated Moruga Scorpion peppers is combined with the classic hot sauce ingredients of garlic, vinegar, and sugar. The end result is a scorpion pepper powder that gives you the authentic flavors of traditional sriracha but with an extra kick.

The Story Behind Trinidad Scorpion Pepper

The Caribbean islands are home to some of the world’s spiciest peppers. The Moruga Scorpion pepper is a special local variety that originated in the small village of Moruga, on the central south coast of Trinidad.

The Moruga Scorpion is a landrace, meaning a locally adapted and traditional variety of chili scorpion pepper that grew and evolved over a long time in a particular location. It gets its name from the village and island where it grows.

The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is a variant of the capsicum chinense species, which is commonly called the “habanero-type” pepper. Native to the Americas, these are among the hottest peppers in the world.

In 2012, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion was declared the world’s hottest pepper by the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University. But the scorpion pepper held that title for less than a year – it was then passed by the Carolina Reaper, which is still (officially) the hottest pepper in the world.

How Spicy Is the Trinidad Scorpion Pepper Powder?

The spiciness or heat level of chili peppers is determined using the Scoville scale, which measures the amount of capsaicin in a pepper. Capsaicin is the key chemical compound that gives peppers that characteristic “kick.” Based on the amount of capsaicin in a pepper, it gets a number rating known as Scoville Heat Units or SHU.

A bell pepper has a SHU of zero since it is not spicy. Regular chili peppers, like the poblano, chipotle, or jalapeno, are at the lower end of the scale, at around 1,000 to 8,000 SHUs. Compared to these, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion powder is insanely hot, rating at about 2 million SHUs!

The Carolina Reaper, the hottest pepper in the world, is just slightly hotter than the Moruga Scorpion pepper at 2.2 million SHUs. Make no mistake, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is a scorching hot chili pepper so be sure to take precautions when cooking with it. Wear gloves when you handle any scorpion pepper powder.

Moruga Scorpion Sriracha Powder Taste Profile

Like many other Caribbean chili peppers, the Moruga Scorpion has a great flavor, dominated by heat, then sweet and fruity notes. It is an excellent choice for a sriracha powder mix, as the traditional Thai condiment is all about bringing together spice, sweet, and sour tastes.

The Trinidad Moruga scorpion powder is very versatile and will work in a wide range of dishes. Its flavor profile makes it exceptionally good for salsas, seafood recipes, chicken, tacos, and cocktails.

If you are looking for that intense, mind-numbing heat, very few chili peppers in the world can give you the same sensation as a Moruga Trinidad Scorpion pepper. Try the Magic Plant Farms Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Sriracha Power today!
